Landmark Herodotus $99 or free*
As part of our celebration of the Battle of Marathon 2,500 anniversary, we will be running our fourth Herodotus reading group moderated by Andre Stipanovic. This reading group will meet first for a kickoff lecture for our celebration of 2,500 year anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, Sunday, Sept 13 with Professor Paul Cartledge of Cambridge. That lecture is free to everyone - as are the remaining 10 lectures for the Battle of Month anniversary lecture series.
Following Paul Cartledge's lecture, the reading group will meet for its first discussion Monday, Oct 11 and will continue on Mondays - Oct 11, Nov 15, Dec 6, Jan 10, Feb 7 and Mar 7, 2011.
Andre will use the custom Reading Odyssey method to make it a good experience and help first-time readers engage the text.
Reading Odyssey process?
The process is simple:
- readers will read approximately one chapter a month of the Landmark Herodotus - with reading questions assigned by the moderator, Andre
- then each month the readers will get on the phone to discuss that chapter (and the reading questions assigned by Andre)
- each phone call is recorded and the .mp3 is made available to the readers who missed it
- Andre is also available via e-mail during the month to answer questions - and members are encouraged to use the group e-mail listserv and blog to discuss the reading
Edition?
We'll be using Robert Strassler's Landmark Edition. It's available at Amazon or can be borrowed through your local library using the Reading Odyssey website directory of U.S. libraries - http://borrowabook.org.
Special guest?
Editor Robert Strassler will join one of the phone calls to spend time with the readers answering questions and discussing the reading.
